2020 CHSL Bishop Division champions: Detroit Catholic Central

 

Championship

Detroit Catholic Central (6-0) 45, Detroit Loyola (5-1) 14

Under the Catholic High School League’s new championship format, Central Division winner Detroit Catholic Central played AA Division leader Detroit Loyola for the Bishop Division title. Catholic Central rolled to a 45-14 victory to earn its first CHSL title since 2016 and its 36th overall. Catholic Central's defense was dominant, forcing six Loyola turnovers in the first half alone. Quarterback Declan Byle threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Owen Semp and five yards and 32 yards to Michael Ramirez, running back Connor Bell scored from four yards and one yard, and Danny Scott from one yard, and Charlie Mentzer kicked a 26-yard field goal.

2020 CHSL Cardinal Division champions: Clarkston Everest Collegiate

Championship

Clarkston Everest Collegiate (6-0) 35, Riverview Gabriel Richard (5-1) 0

Clarkston Everest Collegiate won its third-straight CHSL championship in only their eighth season of football, dominating previously unbeaten Riverview Gabriel Richard, 35-0. Mountaineers' senior quarterback Giovanni Mastromatteo’s 28-yard touchdown strike to Joey Thibodeau got the day’s scoring binge started. Jack Lasceski’s two rushing touchdowns (58, 1) in the second quarter placed the Mountaineers on top 21-0 at the half. Mastromatteo threw for 152 yards and ran for another 65 on the ground. Lasceski logged 135 yards rushing. Slotback Jimmy Neme contributed a 50-yard rushing score for the Mountaineers in the third quarter and Nate Beggs finished off the onslaught with a two-yard plunge across the goal line.

John Shada Award

In 1971, the John Shada Award was instituted in honor and memory of the late John Shada, one of the Catholic League's outstanding coaches. The John Shada Football Award was presented to the offensive and defensive players in each division. In 1980, the award was changed to the John Shada Scholar-Athlete Award. Selection is based also on academic achievement, while being a member of the varsity team.
