Warren De La Salle Collegiate wins CHSL Bishop Division championship

Division 2 No. 1-ranked Warren De La Salle Collegiate beat University of Detroit Jesuit 49-14 to earn the Catholic High School League Bishop Division Championship. De La Salle ended its regular season at 8-0. Jesuit fell to 4-5. It was the Pilots fifth CHSL championship in its history. It was the first for Pilots  coach Dan Rohn, who came to De La Salle last year from Grand Rapids West Catholic. Junior quarterback Brady Drogosh rushed for four touchdowns (58, 24, 2, and 52 yards) to lead the Pilots. Drogosh connected with junior Triston Nichols for a 62-yard touchdown. Sophomore Rhett Roeser tossed a 77-yard halfback pass to junior Jack Yamachik for a touchdown. The two teams will meet again in a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 pre-district matchup. De La Salle beat Jesuit 44-8 on Oct. 8.

Madison Heights Bishop Foley wins CHSL Cardinal Division championship

Division 7 No. 10-ranked Madison Heights Bishop Foley beat Division 8 No. 6-ranked Clarkston Everest Collegiate 43-37 to win its first Catholic High School League Cardinal Division Championship. Foley improved to 8-1 on the season. Everest fell to 7-2. Bishop Foley senior quarterback Dylan Gough found junior Jackson Zeiter for a 38-yard touchdown down the right sideline in the final two minutes to break a 37-37 deadlock. The extra point was missed. Foley recovered an on-side kick on the ensuing kickoff to seal the victory. Gough went 14-of-22 for 276 yards and two touchdowns through the air Saturday. He also rushed for two scores. Zeiter totaled 140 yards receiving and 57 yards rushing for a combined three touchdowns. He returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. Foley held a 24-7 lead at halftime and was in front 31-14 late in the third quarter. Everest rallied in the fourth on three consecutive rushing touchdowns by senior Nate Beggs (three, 15, and 11 yards) and a rushed for a two-point conversion to tie the game at 37-37with 2:54 left in the game. Foley will host Detroit Loyola (4-4) in its Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 7 playoff opener. Everest will host Mt. Clemens (5-4) in its Division 8 playoff opener.

JOHN SHADA AWARD

In 1971, the John Shada Award was instituted in honor and memory of the late John Shada, one of the Catholic League's outstanding coaches. The John Shada Football Award was presented to the offensive and defensive players in each division. In 1980, the award was changed to the John Shada Scholar-Athlete Award. Selection is based also on academic achievement, while being a member of the varsity team.
